NSOs ‘tik’ the box

As the ward-based Neighbourhood Safety Officer deployment takes hold, operational successes are starting to roll in. In one of the latest incidents, officers recovered tik with an estimated street value of R15 000.
On Saturday, 25 October, just before 18:00, Metro Police Neighbourhood Safety Officers were on patrol in Van Riebeeck Road in Bellville, when they spotted a person running away at the sight of the patrol vehicle.
The officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect. They searched him and recovered 130 sachets of tik and more than a thousand rand in cash.
The 28-year-old suspect was detained at Bellville SAPS.
On the same day in Manenberg, LEAP officers arrested a 22-year-old suspect for the possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition in Kei Street, Manenberg, and recovered a 357 magnum revolver and four rounds of ammunition.
On Sunday afternoon, 26 October, LEAP officers recovered two pistols in Olifant street in Manenberg, and arrested three suspects, aged 24, 37 and 39, following a shooting incident in the area.
‘It’s encouraging to see our Metro Police Neighbourhood Safety Officers who were deployed to each ward in the city finding their feet and following in the footsteps of their more established colleagues. I also applaud the LEAP officers who confiscated three firearms in Manenberg this weekend. Our enforcement services do good work, removing drugs and guns from our streets, but we need to see that energy matched by the criminal justice system in the prosecution and conviction of those responsible,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In the last week, Law Enforcement officers made 150 arrests and issued 8 448 fines.
Metro Police officers arrested 95 suspects and issued 2 951 notices. Of those arrested, 26 were motorists found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
Traffic officers made 20 arrests – 15 for driving under the influence, two for reckless and negligent driving and three for various other charges. They also recorded 52 570 offences, impounded 250 public transport vehicles and executed 1 988 warrants of arrest.
‘Our Traffic Services also successfully coordinated plans to manage traffic flow for a number of events in what was a very busy weekend in Cape Town. We appreciate their efforts, and we also extend our gratitude to the public for their cooperation and their patience,’ added Alderman Smith.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre logged 1 709 incidents – the bulk of which were calls for medical assistance or by-law transgressions.
The PECC also dispatched assistance for 92 cases of assault, 52 incidents of domestic violence, 24 shooting incidents and 55 motor vehicle accidents.
